Our collective aim is to raise awareness of autism in females so that girls & women can be recognised, understood and supported effectively.

Who we are

Great things happen when supportive, like-minded people come together.

Autism takes many forms. It’s a spectrum of traits, behaviours and ways of thinking…

…and those traits are not necessarily the same in girls and women as they are in boys and men.

We know that because we’re a group of women who with lived experience autism. Within our trustee body are autistic women, parents of autistic young women, and individuals with experience in working with autistic individuals.

Auti-Ms was established in 2019. The catalyst was reading the story of Sophie McInnes’ journey to a diagnosis.  This story resonated with each of us, reflecting elements of our own journeys and struggles. Initial correspondence over social media led to some group meetings and we recognised a shared passion in each other to make things better for autistic women and girls – both now and in the future.

Women and girls often experience a very different type of autism to the one that ticks the boxes in standard diagnostic tests. We have personal experience of the long, exhausting diagnosis journey and experienced our fair share  of misdiagnosis from undereducated professionals. We are working hard to support others going through this same journey.

If you think you may be autistic or a parent of a child who thinks their child may be autistic – or merely wondering if the condition could explain the way you or your child behave – we’d love to hear from you.
